Mini Expedition to the Nordenskiøld National Park

Dog sledding in Arctic landscape with Svalbard Husky

A short mini-expedition can be just the perfect choice when you think that half a day is not enough, but do not have the time for a long trip.  Being on tour with a dog sled is something totally different.  You will experience the interaction between man and dog and the silence except for paws running on the snow.  You will learn how to set up a winter camp in the sparkling cold, feel the warmth of your sleeping bag and observe the stars in the sky, or the midnight sun, or bad weather.  The cold and beauty will warm your heart.

We pick you up at the agreed place; provide you with warm clothes and shoes.  We will give a short briefing about the equipment we use, and pack everything into boxes for transport.  At the kennel we will pack the sleds and get the dogs ready for the tour.  The tour then proceeds up Bolterdalen and over Bolterskaret.  It is quite steep here so you may have to help the dogs.   Then we drive the dogsleds into the Nordenskiold National Park.  Afterwards we enter the wide Reindalen, where we camp for the night.  Before we set up shelter and prepare food for ourselves, all the dogs must be fed and cared for.  This is an important part of being a dogsled driver; we would not get far with unhappy dogs.  The next day starts with a good breakfast, we pack the camp and prepare the dog teams again.  Then we head home through Gangdalen and down the narrow Todalen.  From Todalen we are back at the kennel where we help each other to unpack the sleds and take care of the dogs.

On this tour you are quite independent and in a small group.  You get your own team of six dogs that you must take care of and watch during the trip.  The guide will help you with the route and make sure that the experience is as positive as possible.  The tour begins with pickup in the afternoon and you are back in Longyearbyen in the afternoon on the following day.

Winter 2-daytrip to Barentsburg, our Russian neighbours, by dogsled.

Winter 2-daytrip to Barentsburg, our Russian neighbours, by dogsled.

Barentsburg is a Russian settlement with about 400 people. Main income in town is mining and tourism. It’s a company-town owned by the Russian governmental mining company “Trust-Arktikugol“.Barentsburg is situated about 55 km from Longyearbyen, there’s no roads between the settlements, so until now, if you want to visit Barentsburg, you either go by snowmobile or boat. But from 2017 it will be possible to visit Barentsburg by dogsled as well.

About the trip:

The trip by dogsled will go in beautiful terrain, in the arctic wilderness. We stay at one of the hotels in Barentsburg. There will also be time to take a walk in Barentsburg to explore the town, the buildings, and the history.

On this tour you are quite independent and in a small group. You get your own team of six dogs that you must take care of and watch during the trip. All meals are included,

Day one:

You will be picked up in the morning at your accommodation. Then a short briefing at our headquarters follows. Here you will be provided with warm outer suits and shoes. You will be given a short brief about the equipment we use, and we pack everything ready for transport. Then we go out to the kennel.

At the kennel we pack the sleds and get the dogs ready for the tour. The guides will give necessary information about how to pack the sled, get the dogs ready, and how to be a musher. It will be a lot of exited dogs, but immediately after take-off, the silence will occur, and you can enjoy the ride in magnificent landscape.

After some hours, halfway, we will find a nice spot for a lunch. Both mushers and dogs need energy.

We arrive at Barentsburg late in the afternoon. There we will stake out our dogs on a night-line just outside the hotel, in the centre of the city. Before we settle in, all the dogs must be fed and cared for. This is an important part of being a musher, we would not get far with unhappy dogs.

At the Hotel we will enjoy a Russian dinner and it will be possible to taste the bear, from their local brewery.

Day two:

On day two we start with a Russian breakfast. Then we will make ourselves, the sleds and dogs ready for a day out in arctic wilderness. On the return we will, if the weather and snow conditions allows us, return by another route in new surroundings. On day two we will pass the abandoned settlement Coals Bay.

We stop for a lunch today as well. Lot’s of energy is needed when we’re outdoor a whole day.

In the afternoon we arrive at the kennel. We help each other to unpack the sleds and take care of the dogs. Then we go back to our headquarter to change clothes before we take you back to your accommodation.

Barentsburg in winter landscape with Svalbard Husky

April Expedition to Nordenskiold Land

April Expedition to Nordenskiold Land with Svalbard HUsky

Have you ever experienced dog sledding and winter camping before?  Or can you imagine spending a fortnight out-of-doors?  Do you dream of white plains, long days on a sled, crystal clear air, midnight sun, camping life and dogs?  Then this could be the trip for you - Nordenskiøld Land Expedition.

The route goes roughly like this: we start from the dog yard and drive west to Revneset. There we turn north, drive over a pass and down to Diabas.  From here we cross Spitzbergen and head eastwards, via Sassen, and up onto the glaciers on the east coast.  Then we proceed down to Dunerbukta, over to Agardhbukta, turn left towards Svea and through Kjellstrømdalen.  We continue to Blåhuken, turn north and cross Reindalen, where we again turn west towards Barentsburg, via Grøndalen.  From Barentsburg, we head homewards, through Colesdalen, Bødalen and down to Tødalen.  Arctic weather and snow will determine whether we must drive home earlier than planned or may cause some route corrections. We will not see any other people than those we start with during most of the trip.  However we will probably meet either snowmobiles or skiers in the same area, since we have chosen Svalbard's finest terrain.

To be a part of such a trip, we have set some requirements for the participant, in relation to both physical fitness and good health.   You must also have been with us for an overnight trip in advance so that we can see that you have mastered life with dogs and the out-of-doors on Svalbard.  It is very important for us to see that you take good care of the dogs in your team.  No prior knowledge of dog sledding is required.

All accommodation takes place in tents; daily stages will be approximately 50 to 70 km, depending on weather and snow.  The average temperature in April is about minus 10 degrees Celsius, with variations from 0 to minus 25 C. There will also be large variations from day to day depending on our location.  The east coast is usually much colder than the west coast.  The weather is normally good in April.  The midnight sun appears from the 19th of April and skies are bright from the 5th of April.

If you think this sounds exciting, the next opportunity for such a trip will be in April, 2017.

Send us an email if you are interested.
